Why donate to Khemara?

According to a 2013 UNICEF report, despite poverty alleviation progress, it is estimated 40 percent of Cambodian households are living just above the poverty line and remain highly vulnerable [1].

Of particular concern is that approximately half of Cambodian children are living beneath the national poverty line [2], with child labour accounting for over 19 percent of the total workforce in Cambodia [3].  Children are viewed as a cheap source of labour, willing to undertake menial roles in order to survive. With insufficient income to support the whole family, parents are often left with no choice but to withdraw their children from school, prioritising income over education, thus embedding a cycle of poverty.
