According to a 2013 UNICEF report, there are an estimated 40 per cent of Cambodian households living just above the poverty line and remain highly vulnerable. However, most concerning is that approximately half of Cambodian children are living beneath the national poverty line, with child labour accounting for over 19 per cent of the total workforce in Cambodia. These children are forced to work as cheap, menial labour in order to survive. Their parents don’t have enough money to support the whole family, which means that these children drop out of school to either work in garment factories or sell their basic wares as street children.
